[View shows over the years....] The Company Theatre was founded in 1979 by Zoe Bradford and Jordie Saucerman. First performing in a church basement on a shoestring budget, the organization quickly gained a reputation for energetic and creative productions. In 1980, the Company incorporated as a non-profit organization and moved productions to a larger auditorium in Weymouth, MA, where performances were given for consistently soldout houses. In 1984, Michael Joseph joined the permanent artistic staff. Together the three directors founded the Academy of The Company Theatre with the mission of providing theatrical training and experience for students between the ages of 7 and 18. The tenacity and commitment to artistic excellence would pay off. In 1990, The Company Theatre won the coveted New England Theatre Conference Moss Hart Award for their original musical "Gloryland, The America Show." The next year they took home the award for Best Non-Equity Production of the Year from the conference for their staging of "Into The Woods." Popularity and strong membership support enabled The Company Theatre to purchase an existing theatre and arts complex in Norwell, MA in 1993. Since then, the Company's season of five stage shows has been complimented by a celebrity showcase featuring performances by such stars as Helen Reddy, Livingston Taylor, John McDermott, Susan Tedeschi, Beatlemania-LIVE!, Richie Havens, and John Astin as Edgar Allan Poe in "Once Upon A Midnight." The Company is proud to have produced the regional premiers of such shows as "Little Shop of Horrors," "A Chorus Line," "Forty Second Street," "Evita," "Into the Woods," "Sweeney Todd," "Falsettos," and "Blood Brothers." The 1996 production of "The Who's TOMMY" led Boston Globe critic Steve Morse to write: "Looking at this fast-moving production may forever change your opinion of regional theatre." In 1997, author Stephen King personally granted The Company Theatre permission to produce one of the first U.S. productions of "Misery." The Company Theatre is proud to have been a core part of the cultural community of Boston's south shore for 25 years. Our mission is to provide high-quality theatre at an affordable price, education and training in the performing arts, and to maintain an exceptional facility where people of all ages, physical abilities and ethnic backgrounds are encourage to express themselves in an open and creative environment. |
Our 25th Anniversary presents us with the opportunity to thank all who have helped bring the organization where it is today - actors, crew, artists, musicians and volunteers, the Weymouth Arts Council, corporate donors and most especially, - our patrons. It is also a time that we, the Artistic Directors, re-dedicate ourselves to providing a haven for talented individuals to express themselves in productions by an award-winning theatre company. We strive to bring quality entertainment, diversity and enrichment to our community. MICHAEL V. JOSEPH |
